About the scheme

What is the Bima Sakhi Yojana?

The Bima Sakhi Yojana is a Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) initiative that the Prime Minister formally launched in Panipat, Haryana on 9 December 2024, positioned as part of the government's broader push on women's empowerment and financial inclusion.

It's open to women between 18 and 70 years old who have passed Class 10. Selected women receive structured training alongside a monthly stipend for their first three years, learning the fundamentals of insurance and financial literacy before starting to work as LIC agents. Women who go on to graduate from the programme can also become eligible for consideration as LIC Development Officers.

The government's stated ambition is to bring around 2 lakh (200,000) women into the insurance workforce through the scheme. Officials speaking at the launch noted that a typical LIC agent earns roughly ₹15,000 a month, while a committed Bima Sakhi has the potential to earn upwards of ₹1.75 lakh a year once training and commissions are factored in — framed as a meaningful addition to household income, and part of a wider goal of extending insurance cover to more Indian families.
